The Devil Wears Prada (no, not the movie) or TDWP is an American metalcore band, formed in 2005. Thier lates album released this year is title With Roots Above And Branches Below.

This band has a huge fanbase, as their brutal yet emo/screamo (my opinion) music has proved to be addictive and gets get you into your headbanging mood. The latest album has proved to be better than the previous.

While there would still be a handfull of haters, TDWP have created an album that would win over many new fans. The lyrics are nothing spectacular but the music is awesome.

Mark my words, The Devil Wears Prada would be a name you would hear a lot in this year.

Never heard of Sakis Rotting?? Well, it's actually Rotting Christ under a different name coming to perform right here im Malaysia. They'll be heading to Stadium Melawati on the 9th of May, sure to bring the house down. (literally eh)

Their coming under a different name to avoid controvesy, its not banned. Well, obviously rotting christ doesn't sound as evil as Rihanna so there's no surprise that there wont be any protests on that. pfft.

Being controvesial by nature, this band would be a must-watch. The many fans in Malaysia would crowd the stadium as 5000 people are expected. Tickets are priced at RM75 , better than paying 200+ ringgit for a shitty line up at Sunburst.

So, Polaryde reccomends you start saving up from now so you dont miss this oppurtunity to be part of the controvesy!!

The Tuborg College Band War @ Live and Bar will begin on the 28th of February 2009.

The contest spans a period of 1 month with 4 selected bands playing every week Tuesday and one winner being selected every week.

The 4 winners will then be in competition for the Grand Prize which will be held in end March 2009 where the winners will receive cash prize and a regular slot at our bar for 1 month.

Winners will be adjuged in the weekly and Grand Final competition by a panel of judges and votes, each criteria encompassing a 50% ratio.

Parkway Drive = CHAOTIC!

For those who missed Parkway Drive, you sure missed a hell of a chaotic and intense show! (me included unfortunately...)

With the MCPA hall packed, this show was a sure success. Parkway Drive performed extremely well, rocking the crowd, encouraging hardcore moshing. If you are a metal head, this is an epic example of a metal gig!

Well, the only downside of the concert is the venue. It was very hot and stuffy inside, though i don't think THAT stopped the Parway Drive fans from having a good time. There were some technical difficulties, which was the only bummer of the gig!

Anyway, enough of the long stories, I'll cut to the chase. Here are the pictures:

Rihanna Concert To Be Postphoned!

Rihanna fans! Sorry to say that Pineapple Concerts has announced that the Rihanna concert, which was supposed to be this month, will be postphoned.

The new date is yet to be confirmed but Pineapple Concerts has said that they'll announce the new date in two weeks time. So, no need to sell your tickets if you've already bought them. And i'm sure they'll refund IF Rihanna wont be coming down to KL. (touchwood, for her fan's sake)

Guess what's the reason for this postphone-ment?? Apparently, she was beat up by her lover, Chris Brown (i always knew smth was wrong with him! haha). She suffered two huge contusions on both sides of her forehead, a split lip, bite marks on her arms and fingers, and a bloody nose (ganas sial this Chris B!).

Head-banging is bad for health???

According to Australia's ABC New's website, researchers concluded that head-banging to a heavy metal tempo could lead to 'mild traumatic brain injury or concussion, and neck injury'.

However, we at Polaryde do not advise you to stop head-banging as that would take away all the fun in a gig/concert.

Our advice: Warm up and dont head-bang so hard as if you're possesed or something. haha

One Buck Short

You know what people say about Malaysian bands? That they don’t go far and don’t last long.

One band that contradicts that statement, which has been around for a while and still rocking hard is none other than

ONE BUCK SHORT

Formed since high school, they begin playing shows at school events and battle of the bands competitions before becoming famous in the local music scene. Today, One Buck Short is one of the leading rock acts in the region!

With hits like “That Day” and “This A Love Song”, and rocking live performances, OBS has wooed loads of fans. This is one of the bands that won’t disappoint! They sound amazing live, and the same goes to their recordings.

OBS has had the privilege to open for Good Charlotte and Fall Out Boy. They also opened for My Chemical Romance.

Their album- Halal And Loving It, is out now and sold at most record stores. I would recommend buying the album, which indirectly shows your support to them.

Still haven’t heard their songs??? Shame on you! Haha

Here's part 2 of the Guide to Copyright. It's a bit long but very informative.

WHAT DOES 'PUBLISH' MEAN?
to have a publishing hold (or right) of your material and to get your songs published are two different things. the former means the song is owned and governed by a specific body (i.e. your publishing company that you and your songs are signed to, whether it's a major publisher or your own rm60 company). the latter means the song is released and available to the public in the form of an album (cassette, cd, lp, md, mp3 etc.). here's a pickle: to safeguard your songs, you need to get a publisher (or be one yourself... more on this later). but to get a publisher, you need to get your songs published first! chicken and egg. this is because the major publisher does not want to manage songs that are not going to be in albums (these are called inactive or non-performing works). but don't fret, there is a solution.

this is what you can do. get your songs recorded onto an album, doesn't matter if it's your own album (but make sure you have intentions to release it soon) or on other artiste's album (also with intent to release). before the album is printed and released, pay a visit to a major publisher and offer to sign up with them (direct or sub-publish, be aware, you need to have your own company for the latter) and mention that you have your works recorded in an album to be released soon. in other words, the status of your works is classified as "will-definitely-be-published-soon". some major publishers will have no problems signing up with this.

GETTING A PUBLISHING DEAL
regarding macp, yes, they can help you with information but better consult a music publisher (even better, a major publisher like any of the following):

1. Universal Music Publishing (my sub-publisher. done a very good job for me to date)
2. EMI Music Publishing (I believe this is still running even though the label has closed down)
3. Warner Chappell Music Publishing
4. Sony Music Publishing (the BMG publishing side is bought over by Universal Music Publishing)

they cover a wider aspect of copyright protection of your songs. why majors? they act internationally. major publishers are best for their influence and track record for managing, marketing (although some are more vigorous and successful than others - talking from experience), detecting digital theft and chasing people for royalties (including macp!), all on your behalf for a certain percentage of the royalties you earn. how much of a percentage? depends on what kind of contract you have (there are two).

1. direct signing - this is where you are signed directly to a publisher. pro: they do all of the above for you, as long as you submit the info regarding your works to them, and promote your songs for local and international artistes/record labels/producers. con: they normally take half of your royalty earnings for doing the aforementioned and they own the rights to your works. so what's the point you ask? look at it this way: some people like to makan gaji, some people like to have their own business. direct signing is like 'makan gaji'. and unless you are a composer with a string of hits, you can negotiate for a higher percentage for yourself. a newbie will normally get a 50/50 deal. for a hit-maker, probably around 70/30 or 75/25, very rarely 80/20, although possible.

2. sub-publishing - this is where you publish your own songs but assign the sub-publisher (the major publishing company) to manage your songs for you. they normally don't promote as aggressively like a direct signing but these days, they are happy for any of their songs to be picked up. pro: you have a bigger royalty cut and you own the rights to your works but... con: they still take a percentage off your earnings (although not as much as a direct signing) and you have to setup a company (sole-proprietor or partnership is accepted). in the album sleeve, your songs will be credited as such:

TRABYE'S ADVICE
my advise to everyone not in the know is this: sign up with a trusted publisher of your choice. by saying this, i mean, some people prefer big publishers, some don't. the best way for me thus far, is register a sole-proprietorship/partnership (rm60) company (sdn. bhd. can come in later when you have more works and are serious about publishing as a business), and get a sub-publisher's contract with a major publishing.

and if you think you can publish it all on your own, here's a list of headaches for you to deal with:
1. monitor release or ALL albums EVERY month, make sure no one infringes your rights
2. chase EVERY record label for mechanical royalties
3. monitor EVERY SINGLE ringtone company for infringements
4. malaysia is already too wide to cover but the world? i mean, c'mon!

conclusion: just sign up!

As for me , i think The Killers has been bringing up theirself so differently as how they used to be before . From the very typical mainstream new age american rock and roll tune from Hot Fuss , to the very alternative sound they had done for Sam's Town , and currently with their newly cut album released ; The Killers is back with their album titled Day & Age .

This time with a major twist of new-wave element included in their tracks , they again has brought a new look for the band . With the wonder track of the album entitled 'Human' , vocalist Brandon Flowers himself acclaimed that this has been the band's "most playful record". With the recent release of the album on November 24, 2008 in the UK, Canada and the US , it has been debuted at number 1 in the UK albums chart selling over 200,000 copies in its first week , and at number 6 in the USA selling over 190,000 copies in its first week . This shows that the world is getting a big hit onto this long upcoming band .

Here's a guide for you musicians! Nowadays, with piracy and stuff becoming very common, it is IMPORTANT to know the basics to copyright your music. If not, whatever you create no matter how good, could be copied by someone else and you won't be able to do anything about it. Many bands or musicians do not know this and it can prove costly later on...

  You've just written a song which you knew would be the killer-hit of the year. You've played the song at gigs with your band and everybody's been telling you how great the song is. Suddenly, one day you hear a song on the radio that sounds exactly like it!!! What do you do? What can you do? More importantly, what should you have done to protect your rights if ever this situation arises?

Every musician, songwriter, band member (that's YOU!!!) should be equipped with the basic knowledge of copyright and copyright law. Know your rights. Music is a business, and the new generation of musicians must not only be musically adept, but also business & legal-savvy.

The first part of this article deals with copyright law. It explains as simply as possible what is copyright, as applied to us musicians and songwriters. In the follow-up to this article, I'll talk about music publishing. Most of the points here have been extracted from my studies at ICOM. Your band leader should grab a copy of the Copyright Act 1987 which is available at major book stores (e.g. MPH) for around RM15. Books related to statutory topics may be a turn-off at first, but trust me, you'll wish you've known all these things much earlier.

Some of the information here has been extracted from MACP’s website at www.macp.com.my but editied for easier understanding. I hope that I've presented the information as accurately and concisely as possible. I would like to apologize for any errors and I would welcome feedback from you guys who read the article.

Part 1 : Copyright

What is Copyright?

That No.1 hit-song that you've just written is categorized as a "musical work" and it includes the melody and lyrics (more on this later). Copyright in relation to a musical work is the exclusive right which the owner has over its use and his entitlement to rely on the law to prevent others from using such work without his consent.

The Copyright Act of 1987 defines copyright in relation to a musical work as being the exclusive right to:

•   reproduce a work in any material form;

What makes my song eligible for Copyright?

•   Your song is an original song
•   Your song has been written down, recorded or otherwise reduced to material form.

"Material form" here means any form (whether visible or not) of storage from which your song or a substantial part of it can be reproduced. This includes notation, tabs, MIDI sequences, your Cubase project file, even your band's jamming cassette recordings too.

Don't celebrate yet. Your song being eligible doesn't mean that it qualifies for copyright protection. Same thing goes for driving. After you're 17, you're eligible to drive, but you're not qualified to drive until you obtain your drivers license. Get it? OK, next step is...now that you know your song is eligible for copyright, how does it qualify for protection, so that your rival songwriter doesn't rip-it-off from you?

How does my song qualify for protection?

•   The author (the composer...which means the one who wrote the song), or joint authors (maybe you wrote the songs with your bandmates) is at the time when the song was composed a qualified person.
•   Your song is first published in Malaysia
•   Your song was composed in Malaysia

Sorry guys. More jargon and definitions. And the point about "published" needs to be be covered in Part 2. And "qualified person"? What's that? It simply means that you are :

i) "warganegara" Malaysia, or
ii) a permanent resident in Malaysia.

Who owns the Copyright?
The author of the work is the first owner of the copyright. However, where the work is written by an employee in the course of his duties, then the employer is regarded as the legal author of the work. On the other hand where the making of a work is commissioned and in the absence of any agreement to the contrary, the author and the ownership of the copyright by him is only surrendered if he should assign his exclusive rights to the commissioning party.

OK this paragraph I have to admit is cut-and-paste. Well, it just means that the author, YOU, are the "first owner" of the copright. We'll learn later how you can "lose" the ownership of the copyright.
If, by any chance you're employed by a publishing house or production house, and they pay you to write songs, jingles, background music, the employer is regarded as the owner. If you're commissioned to write a song for Siti Nurhaliza's record label, you'll lose your ownership by assigning your rights to them (usually got written agreement lah...)

What is the Duration of Copyright?
Very simple, as long as you're alive +PLUS 50 years after your death.

So here's what you should do
Record your song (quality doesn't matter) onto any format CD, MD, VHS, cassette, MP3 whatever...notate it, tab it, sequence it...it has to be reduced to "material form". The Copyright Act doesn't mention it but you must remember LABEL and DATE it clearly!!! Yes, check your old jamming cassettes now.....if you still have them!!!

Gibson has come up with a new guitar called the Dark Fire which even looks cool and sound awesome to us non-guitar freaks!

It looks like the reason Gibson's self-tuning Robot guitar had a limited run is that the legendary guitar innovator had a much more insane second stage already blueprinted up: Gibson's Dark Fire Les Paul-style digital guitar is the crowning shred-related scientific achievement of our time.

Think of it as the Robot plus the Moog synth guitar rolled into one. First and foremost, it's a guitarist's guitar, with three different kind of pickups—a humbucker, a single-coil and a bridge-mounted piezo acoustic—all capable of contributing their sound to an original, organic blend of totally real guitar noise.

Having anchored itself firmly in Gibson's traditions, it's also got some crazy new stuff. Like the Robot, it self-tunes (now up to 500 times on a single battery charge), and using the "Chameleon Tone Technology" it is capable of producing "every imaginable guitar sound," says Gibson.

The company is quite proud of the Master Control Knob—presumably with a bit of a Tron shoutout there—though I can only imagine that the "sophisticated full color matrix display featuring LEDs and high-tech light pipe technology" takes a little bit of a hike up the learning curve.

Those who know of Les Paul's guitar innovations will appreciate that Gibson is carrying on his tradition of complication as a necessary means for cooler guitar tech. Some of Les' personal guitars had tons of mostly unmarked switches on them, not to mention a few boxes off to the side.

Speaking of boxes, a lot of the digital mojo is facilitated by the guitar's interface, the Robot Interface Pack, which has jacks on the front for the guitar and headphones. On the rear there's a FireWire connector (hear that, new MacBook shoppers?) and a hex connector, which can be adapted for MIDI output. The good news for suckers who bought the first-gen Robot is that the upgrade will be available to them at a price close to cost. (My guess is they'll make the money on labor when you take your Robot in for the upgrade.)

Though Gibson won't promise "infinite sustain" like Moog, it does say that its body design makes "the Dark Fire one of the best-sustaining Les Pauls ever produced." Cool.

Soundscape Records is proud to announce a one-night-only show for internationally acclaimed instrumental band Mogwai, here in Malaysia.

With the date set for 21st January, venue at Tuborg Stage, Hall 5, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, local post-rock fans have a lot more reason to celebrate the brand new year.

On tour for their sixth and latest album, The Hawk is Howling - the band returns to its roots, working again with producer Andy Miller for the first time in a decade. As is expected from the 13-year old band's critically acclaimed brand of instrumental post-rock, The Hawk is Howling is a completely instrumental album - where the only 'conversation' comes from the often intense, sometimes ethereal, but always majestic play of different instruments.

Whatever it is, one thing is sure - Mogwai's breathtaking style of music that sometimes leaves listeners hanging in mid-air with euphoria and send them reeling with uncommon energy, is all set to mark Jan 21st as a historical day in Malaysia's becoming as an international musical stop point.

Come the 2nd of January 2009, Live and Bar will be organizing its first College Band War.

The competition will run for a month every Friday and Saturday of the week.

Each night will feature 4 bands of which the winner of the night will remain in contention for the Grand Finals.

The weekly winners will receive RM 200 , gift packs and a bucket of Tuborg.

The winner of the Grand Finals will receive RM 1500 and a paid slot in Live and Bar every Friday.

Winners in the weekly competitions are judged by the crowd. The crowd will decide who they would like to see appear in the finals at the end of the month.

The Grand Finals will see professional judges as well as the crowd decide who is the overall winner. The ratio of which will be 50% judges choice and 50% audience choice.

You know how many say that prom is overrated. Well, let me tell you one that isn't! SJ PROM!

I know you are like "Prom?? NO way!" but think again as i can assure you that everyone will have a blast! Why? First of all, it's at KL TOWER. How many events do you get to attend there man! And, the view is B-E-A-Utiful.
Just see the view you can get. On the other hand, the performances lined up are awesome. One Buck Short, K Town Clan, Bunkface, some talents from SMK Subang Jaya and more. What more can you ask for?

So get your damn local independent threads now ! If clothing labels were to be bands , it's best described as ' bigger than The Beatles , Cheaper than the pirates ' . harharhar . get what i mean , folkss ?!. ;P

Anyways , today's entry is going to be about our local independent fashion industry . Which is better known as the street wear culture which is kind of the in thing nowadays among those artsy fartsy 'cool' indie kids . As for the past 2 years , the Malaysian local music scene has been standing side by side the clothing scene to co-operate among themselves , supporting each other to bring up both the scene that has been quite a let down before this . Why is it a let down ? . The scene hasn't been supported by any form of govermental body which results in the run down of the music scene , only after both of the enforcement ( those music and clothing kids ) started having gigs and events going all scattered around the country , the scene was brought back to live . Thanks to the guys , today , some certain events held by them are now supported by the rakan muda and any other form of governmental body . Now , Malaysia has been quite a hotspot for all kind of people to come and experience good street culture !

Ending the history ! Let's move on to the label . : ) . Here today , i would like to introduce you folks to one of the clothing label that has been around in the region since last year . Eventhough they're not that famous YET . We'll be reviewing them anyways . Cos i can easily get the infos of the label . Cos Eugene the Fat is one of the founder ! hahahaha ! ...

I know we maestros are wondering since last year on where the heck RTW ( rock the world ) is . It WAS supposed to be held annually , but nobody knows the reason for last year's lost . Honestly , 2007 was kinda sucked for me just because RTW wasn't held. Was missing the muddiness padang of that Stadium Merdeka , the frantic crowd while Republic of Brickfields played , the sweets The Times gave their fans as a token of appreciation ( i think it was hacks or something they threw a bag full to the crowd ) . And hell yeah i remembered that crowd surfing chick who got her boobs grabbed . Sumpah , tak tipu . Hahaha . Anyways , it really was a musically blast i had on that day . I know we waited the whole year for 07's , and it was a letdown ! because they didnt have it last year . But what the heck , im more than happy that they are going to make it happen this year . Therefore folks , who has got no idea what this is about , or people who anticipated this event of the year , Polaryde.zine reviews ROCK THE WORLD 9 !

ROCK THE WORLD ! a local rock concert done in big scale , providing great local music experience to the country . Held annually ( except last year ) , it's a long anticipated music event waited by malaysia's independent music followers . Greetings folks ! .

with me posting this post today , i here by , unofficially launch , your local online blog-cum-magazine site . WE ARE POLARYDEEEE! . (ain't spartan , motherfishes! ;P )

So , here goes .

Polaryde.zine , an independent online blog-cum-magazine (also known as an e-zine) founded by Nicholas Mark Pereira and co-founded by your very own fat ass Eugene mathew . It's an original idea of setting up a platform to promote and support anything that goes with our local scene , particularly the youth , which includes ; the music , sporting , education , fashion , or God's will , even the political aspect aswell . ( but we ain't want em' ISA officers to come pay us some visit , ain't we ? haha ) .

From our local top billboard artists to succesful entrepenuers and individuals , Polaryde.zine is here to give its best providing articles and reviews to fullfil the needs of boosting up the excitement of our present youths to participate and altogether , to be united .
by setting this sort of independent platform for our local homegrown artistes to spread their wings , we in the other hand will try our best to expand our media into the foreign regions and to be hold them of our local scene , and stop ourselves from the tantalization to be known far out into the international .

Hello all! Today, I’ll introduce everyone to this thing called Live & Bar.

Taken from their blog: “Live & Bar @ Platinum Club was established with the sole intention of providing patrons with high quality live music (regardless of genre i.e. indie, rock, acoustic), a warm ambience for anyone to chill out and knock back a nice cold beer whilst digging on bar snacks.”

If you have a band and wanna start playing gigs and get known, this is where you can start. All you have to do is attend a short audition and if they like your band, they’ll give you a 45-minute slot! Cool eh. So, if you’re really interested in promoting your band and taking it to the next level, I strongly recommend Live & Bar.

I think this is a wonderful idea and we should all support their initiative to promote music in Malaysia or specifically in the Klang Valley. So, guys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, tomboys and shemales, check out their BLOG.

Hey! Since this blog is still very new and ZERO people read it at the time being, ill like to recommend a few communities that is useful to those interested in music or even just to hang out and discuss.

First up, JAMTANK

This is a site I personally go to almost everyday. Note that you’ll have to sign up and activate via email but its worth it! For those into bands, you can share comments on bands locally or even find band members! Looking for equipments or thing to buy, there’s a classifieds section there where you can find buyers and sellers for almost anything. You can also discuss anything under the sun there with other members.

Trust me its worth the click! =D

Secondly, SMEEX

I’ve only recently discovered this site and so far it’s not bad other than the fact that it isn’t updated daily. There’s this cool system where you can instantly search for someone that is looking for a band. For example, you can search for a drummer that is looking for a band, and his profile will show up. There you can chat with him and get to know him and maybe recruit him ke apa. There’s also a forum there.

Next, YOuthsays

You can take surveys here and get paid! Besides that, you can also discuss your interests, current issues and make new friends. Have a blog? You can promote your broadcast your blog and get more readers. Finally, you can also ask questions and the network of youth will give you the anwers. Also just recently discovered this site and hoping to learn more about it. Cool idea for the Malaysian youth!
